The last snow of the season — one of my favorite spots to photograph trees, just before spring starts to take over
It seems like winter is beginning to loosen its grip and make way for spring. It’s still February, but this weekend’s forecast promises full sun and temperatures reaching 15°C. These are the days I live for as a cyclist — when I can leave my long-sleeved bibs and jersey at home and simply enjoy the warmth on my skin.
With this likely being the last snowfall of the season, I felt drawn to one of my favorite places. It’s a spot I return to often, especially when I’m in the mood to photograph the sculptural trees that dot the landscape. No matter the season, they always offer something new. In winter, they stand in stark contrast to the snowy expanse. In spring, their branches start to hint at life. And in summer and autumn, they wear their foliage like crowns, each phase telling a different story.
I’ve photographed one of these trees before, back when winter still held the landscape in its quiet embrace. You can see that version in a photo I shared in January.
The seasons shift, but the place remains the same. A few months later, I returned to that tree, and it looked completely different — reborn in the gentle glow of early spring light. That moment is captured in a post from June. The warmth of the season’s first rays wrapped around the tree, softening its edges and filling the frame with golden light.
Each time I visit, I find a new story to tell with my camera. This winter visit, though, felt different. There’s a quiet awareness that the snow will soon be gone, and the trees will be surrounded by the colors and sounds of spring. The thaw is beginning, and with it comes the anticipation of new growth and fresh beginnings.
I always find something grounding in these quiet moments — the kind that remind me to slow down, breathe, and take it all in. As the season shifts again, I look forward to returning with my camera, ready to capture whatever nature decides to offer next. Whether it’s the first buds of spring or the last whispers of winter, this place never disappoints.

A lovely image as always
Always appreciate your support, Mark. Thank you!
Lovely shot and a really nice location. I’m not sure I have a Season I prefer as such, I love the low light months when the Sun is in our South I guess 🙂
Thanks so much! It really is a special spot. And I know what you mean about the low light months. There’s something about that southern sun that makes everything feel softer, more cinematic.
