A Surprising February Walk: The Sparrows of Winter

On the last day of February, the weather felt more like spring than winter. The usual chill had vanished, replaced by +16°C, clear skies, and sunshine — a perfect day for a walk.

I headed to one of my favorite spots near the river, surrounded by open fields. It’s a place I often visit to photograph birds, and although I didn’t expect to see the usual winter visitors, I packed my telephoto lens, hoping for a chance encounter.

To my surprise, I came across a small group of sparrows hopping among the branches. Though they weren’t the majestic birds I had hoped for, their charm quickly won me over. The warm sunlight bathed them in golden tones against the bare branches. Though common, their presence felt comforting in the quiet winter landscape.

I spent a few minutes observing and photographing them. Their small movements and gentle tilts of the head brought a peaceful moment. It wasn’t the birding adventure I had planned, but it was exactly what I needed.

The beauty of that day was in the unexpected warmth and simple surprises. Winter often feels cold and gray here, but that afternoon, nature’s delicate beauty reminded me to appreciate the little things — like the sparrows that are often overlooked.

The warmth and simplicity of the day, spent observing sparrows in the sun, left me appreciating the small, quiet moments of nature. It was a beautiful escape from the usual cold winter, with a feeling of peacefulness that stayed long after the walk.
