Summer Cycling Season — Riding Through the First Heatwave

Sunset over a quiet road during the summer cycling season in Poland
A colorful sunset at the end of a warm summer ride during the first heatwave of the season.

The summer cycling season arrived almost overnight. Temperatures have already climbed to 34°C, and the forecast suggests even hotter days next week.

With summer here, I’ve switched from my touring bike to the road bike for most of my rides. The only downside is that road cycling kit leaves very little room for photography gear. Those tight jerseys are great for aerodynamics, but not so great when you’re trying to carry a camera. Apparently, cyclists are expected to choose between speed and photography. 😄

When possible, I try to head out closer to the evening, when the heat starts to ease and the roads become a little more comfortable. The light is usually better as well. That said, I’m not particularly afraid of the sun, so I still end up riding in the heat from time to time.

This sunset was waiting at the end of one of those rides — a splash of color above a quiet road and a nice way to finish a warm summer evening. ☀️🚴‍♂️

Thanks for reading. Until the next ride — and the next photograph. 🚴‍♂️📷
