Coot chicks are not the birds most people notice when visiting Arturówek Park near Łódź. Most visitors come for the beach, playgrounds, rope courses, cafés, or simply to enjoy a sunny day by the water. My family and I came for the same reason, but as often happens, I also brought my camera.
A small lake forms the heart of Arturówek Park. Over the years, the city has turned the area into a popular recreational destination. On warm days, walkers, cyclists, and families fill the paths, while crowds gather along the waterfront to relax by the water. Despite the constant activity, plenty of wildlife still thrives in the park.
I noticed almost immediately how comfortable the waterfowl were around people. On the lakes near my town, coots usually keep their distance. Here, they often fed or cared for their young even as people walked past. In some cases, I got close enough to almost touch them. The difference was striking.
That gave me a rare opportunity to photograph a coot family with very young chicks. Adult coots are fairly plain birds, dressed almost entirely in black, but their chicks look completely different. Bright red heads and golden-orange down make them some of the most unusual-looking young birds in Europe. Seeing them up close revealed details that often go unnoticed when people watch these birds from farther away.
The coot family paid little attention to the activity around them. The chicks stayed close to the adult as they moved through the shallow water, occasionally gathering around the parent in search of food or attention. Those brief interactions gave me exactly the moments I hoped to capture.

These coot chicks were one of the unexpected highlights of our visit to Arturówek. While most people were enjoying the attractions around the lake, I found myself focused on a small wildlife encounter that made the outing memorable and gave me the chance to photograph a species I rarely get this close to.
If you’re interested in these birds, take a look at my earlier post, A Sunny Day of Spring at the Lake, which shows a coot in a much less crowded setting.
